Sarah and Erik

Ashley and I photographed Sarah and Erik's wedding in late June. The wedding was held at the Rose Garden near the Des Moines Art Center. It was a day where we sure the weather was going to win and force the wedding indoors, but as is typically the case the weather cleared and a beautiful outdoor wedding took place.

Sarah and Erik are the type of bride and groom that we like. They were willing to put things in our hands and trust in what we do. That allows us to give all we have to create amazing photos on their wedding day. We shot formal photos at the Rose Garden, but following the wedding we headed over to the State Captiol area for some more candid formal photos (the good ones.) Traditional formal photos are falling farther and farther out of favor with many of our brides and grooms and us as well. They are more of a must do than a want to do. A chore.

The weather at this point in the day was beauitfully cloudy and rain free. We like to shoot at the capitol a lot, but not because of the capitol. This area provides great views of the city. We had a fun time with Sarah and Erik as well as their families and wedding party. Below is a selection of our favorite shots from the day. Congratulations Sarah and Erik!

Angela and Adam

Ever seen a bride get rained on? I have. This blog post is skipping over several others that are also waiting, but it's for a good reason. I have a fun story to tell. You may remember Angela and Adam from their engagement session where we were kicked out of an Omaha Museum. Well this past Saturday was their big day here in Ankeny. Angela and Adam have been amazing to work with. They have fun personalities and take everything in stride. Even a rained on bride.

The weather was less than perfect this past Saturday as it rained all day, atypical for a summer day. Typically we may get a little rain in the morning or a little in the afternoon, or even some temporary thunderstorms, but it rained off and on for most of the day.

We thought we caught a clearing so we headed outside to take some photos with Adam and his best man's cars. We were shooting away when a heavy but brief rain shower started. I heard some rain drops and the a loud "Oh, No." That would be the bride. We were about 200 feet from the doors to the church and it had started to downpour. As we all ran for the church the groom asked if I needed his jacket to cover my equipment. Cover my equipment? I was shooting. I wasn't going to let this running of the bride go uncaptured. There were several other guys who promptly covered the bride with their jackets as she sprinted for the church. We were able to capture a few shots as we ran as well.

Now, I was worried that Angela would be a wreck after that. Not at all. I stopped over a couple times to check on her and aside from a little make-up touch up she was good to go. The ceremony with off without a hitch and the sun was shining when it wrapped up. We stopped at the Ankeny DMACC campus for some shots with the group and just the two of them. I thought for a brief moment we were going to be getting kicked out of somewhere again as a campus security vehicle slowed down and eyed us for a while, but he made the right choice to move along. Beautiful day, beautiful wedding, another chapter for our tell-all we write someday. Congratulations Angela and Adam.

Lumadue

We have been taking photos of the Lumadue's for several years now. We shot Brittany and Eric's engagement photos, Andy and Diana's wedding, family photos, and baby photos of Makenzie. We shot these photos in June at Gray's Lake. The southeast corner of Gray's Lake has become one of my favorite spots. The trees line up perfectly for late afternoon photos with the sun shining from behind the trees.

Lisa and Andy

I shot these engagement photos for Lisa and Andy back in June. It was a questionable weather day, but in the end it was perfect. The overcast skies gave soft even lighting. The clouds were quite textured and gave a great background. We started near the capitol and headed downtown after that. The shoot went great and we turned out some awesome shots. The shoot ended right as it started to rain. There was one weird moment where we were bombarded and asked for cigarettes. All part of being downtown.

Nyah

We've both been lucky to be able to photograph Nyah a few times. She has huge eyes that photograph beautifully. We shot these in Valley Junction on a nice afternoon. After seeing photos of a young one in studio, it is great to get outside and get them in front of some better backgrounds. The studio is nice, but we would much much rather be outside shooting.

Owen

Being able to capture a baby while still in the hospital provides a unique look into the first hours/days of life. Ashley had the opportunity to photograph Owen both at the Hospital and in studio. Given a good hospital room Ashley is able to capture some truly unique photos of newborns within their first few days of life. These photos from June show Owen in the hospital as well as in studio shortly there after.

Tinley

Ashley shot these photos back in May. They are little Tinley's newborn photos. When I was in high school everyone always told me how fast life would go by and to slow down and enjoy it. Of course I didn't believe it when I was sitting through trigonometry or physics. However, now that I have kids I completely understand. We are always busy. The kids are growing way too fast. Before you know it photos like these are being displayed at high school graduation parties. Our kids are only 1, 3, and 4 but I know that it is coming faster than i want it to. Enjoy today and every day because there is no turning the clock back. We hope that our photos help you remember what it was like when...

Grace

There are some great unique photos of Grace in this set that Ashley shot in May. Grace was having a great time with Mom and Dad...and all of her closest friends.

Mason

A couple days ago I posted about our journey from photographing someone's wedding to photographing their kids. Such an amazing experience. This is another case of that. Mason is the son of Nick and Tera who's wedding we photographed. Mason did not appear too happy to be having his photo taken. You just have to give them time. They will warm up, get used to their surroundings, and smile. Ashley shot these at Water Works Park back in May.

Amelia

Yet another late post from back in April...my list of back posts is down to like 20 though...Ashley photographed Amelia back in April. As you will be able to tell from the photos below, she was quiet at first and not sure what to think. She did warm up and Ashley was able to capture some great shots. Even the ones where she is being more serious turned out great. They tell a different side of Amelia. It is great to tell a well rounded story of little ones. The most important thing is to capture them exactly as they are. Props overwhelm photos and take away from the subject, the person or people in them. The less the better. There is chaos and noise everywhere and from that a photo must extract meaning and purpose. To use a bunch of props only introduces noise and distraction. That being said, simple props can tell a great story when used correctly. If we just have some picnic setting, park setting, or other generic setup that we take everyones photos in...boring. Focus on the subject.

Leif and Lane

A shoot from way back in April. Ashley shot these on location at Leif and Lane's house. The lighting was amazing in their backyard. Some of these look like they were shot with an off camera light, but they weren't. Ashley used the time of day to her advantage. The sun is less powerful and can be used as a great light source. Golden hour, 1/2 hour before and after sunset. Get out and take photos during this time and you will find that you are much happier with your results.

Madeline

One of the greatest rewards Ashley and I have is to watch and be a part of your lives. We capture some of the most important times of your life through our cameras. It's an experience that is hard to explain. It's difficult to put words to what it means to be a part of such fleeting moments. Every second of life is precious and not to be taken for granted. We are very grateful that you take time to let us into your lives and learn about each and everyone of you.

Ashley and I shot Nikki and James wedding a few years ago. Now they have a child. Ashley captured these photos of Madeline not too long ago. From the first time we met Nikki and James we knew they were great people. Nikki was planning her wedding long distance and James was doing the ground work here in the area. We met with James and he seemed a little nervous about it all. Now they have a kid and she is growing fast.

Caleb

These shots are from back in May in Valley Junction. It just happened to be on a day where they were having an antique show in Valley Junction so we stuck to mainly alleyways, which isn't uncommon anyway. I used to work with Caleb's mom and in a true showing of "it's a small world", she actually already knew some Nuzum's. My cousin and his wife. Caleb was fun to work with and we had a great time. I chased him around for a while and we turned out some great shots. I have a lot of fun taking photos of 2-3 year olds. Check out a few of our favorites below.

Carrie and Tyler

Fresh Chuck's for all the groomsmen? 311 during dinner? A full rendition of Thriller? The best baby photos we have ever seen? I think this was the wedding we were meant to have. Carrie and Tyler had an amazing wedding in Urbandale and Johnston last month. They are two of the funnest people we have ever photographed a wedding for. They were so laid back through out the entire day, not showing one sign of nerves at any point....that we saw. They were amazing. We shot all the church formals in like ... 20 minutes. Unheard of.

The wedding was at Gloria Dei Luthern Church in Urbandale with the reception following at Stoney Creek in Johnston. It was a beautiful day for being outside. We hit the park near Walker Johnson park in Urbandale which includes a skate park and some wooden tower thing...we jumped on it for a few photos. It's a cool spot given the location. Quite and secluded even in such a busy area (near the intersection of 86th and Douglas.)

The photos that came out of the photo booth were amazing as well, but those won't make the blog this time. It was great to hear how much fun people had in the photo booth as well as the bride herself telling me it may have been her favorite part of the night...that's pretty cool. Glad everyone is enjoying our version of the photo booth and glad to hear about it. We also turned out some of the funnest and most interesting dancing photos ever. Amazing. If you two want to get married again next year, we will shoot it for free. Congratulations to Carrie and Tyler!

Emily and Brent

Ashley and I photographed Emily and Brent's wedding on June 4th. Yes, the blog is still that far behind, but it's getting better. Emily and Brent's wedding was in the Waukee and West Des Moines area. The ceremony was at the beautiful St. Boniface in Waukee. We've shot weddings here in the past and love the layout and lighting. It is one of our favorites. The sun shines throughout the church and provides a great setting for a church. We work in some dark churches at times, so this one is a great change. Photography requires light and the more the better.

The weather was perfect and we made great use of it. The wedding party hung out at a local establishment in West Glen for a bit and we snapped a ton of shots with the wedding party and just the bride and groom right there. The parking garage and surrounding area provided a good location for photos. Just as a side note, I am not nor will I ever be a bus mechanic. The bus driver was having issues with a lift on the front step. Luckily it got fixed right before we took off to go to another spot. We stopped on the well manicured grounds of the Farm Bureau campus. We were able to get a few shots with just Emily and Brent here before heading to the reception.

It was a great day and these two had a beautiful wedding. Families, friends, bridal party, bride and groom were all amazing to work with and made for a great hiccup free day. Congratulations to Emily and Brent!

A Photographer's View on The Reception

The most important choice you make regarding your wedding day may very well be the DJ you choose, or don't choose. It's tough to know exactly what kind of DJ you are getting. It's hard to get a feel for the atmosphere via a video. It's impossible to know how things will flow if you haven't seen them work. Yet, this person controls the tempo, mood, and energy at your wedding reception. You may want a slow tempo, sit-down reception or you may want a fast tempo, high energy reception. Which ever it is you can struggle with finding a DJ that fits that mold because you can't test drive the DJ. As photographers we are along for which ever events you have us booked for. So we aren't concerned with the pace or tempo or anything else. We are photographing whatever happens. What we are concerned with is what is in the photos. If you look bored or your guests look bored ... the photos will show that.

We've seen the good and we've seen the bad. Here are some key things and our recommended schedule, not that we are experts, but we've been unbiased observers at a wedding or two:

1. Make your grand entrance. Know the route you are going to take and make sure your bridal party knows the plan once they've entered the reception area. Don't wait to decide until right before you walk in. Rehearse it like you would the ceremony.

2. Make a welcoming speech or begin dinner. The guests are hungry and are there to see you. Let them know right away that you are excited to have them with you on your big day. Then feed them.

3. While guests are still eating begin toast. Don't wait until everyone is done eating, especially if you have a lot of guests. The guests that started eating early will be done and bored. This includes wedding party, parents, and bride and groom if they did not give a welcoming speech.

4. Cut the cake following toasts. Some guests may still be eating. When it comes to cake cutting about 10 people gather around the table and no one else can see anyway. So getting this done will keep guests engaged in the other events to come.

5. First dance time. If you want guest to be interested and paying attention to what's happening, keep them engaged. Move from one event to the next. If some people are still eating they will be more likely to pay attention. It's not uncommon for the DJ to not engage everyone and they will not even be aware that the first dance is taking place. Trust us, we've seen it.

6. Other dances: Mother/Son, Father/Daughter, Wedding Party, Anniversary, etc., etc., etc.

7. Now it's time for the DJ to do their thing and get people out on the dance floor. Keep the music going and play songs that everyone loves. Songs that engage the young, old, and everyone in between. These first few moments are key to how the rest of the evening flows.

8. After 3-4 songs, get the bouquet and garter toss going. No reason to wait on these things until chunks of guest have left. Do them now and let guests enjoy them.

9. A few more songs and then do the dollar dance. A lot of DJs think they are helping the bride and groom by moving this earlier and before the bouquet/garter toss so they get more money out their guests ..... ah, how about not using the dollar dance to cover wedding expenses. The money from the dollar dance is all bonus. It's house money. It should not be counted on income.

10. Let the party roll from there.

Good DJs Do:
1. Keep their mouth shut and keep the music going.
2. Play relevant music and a good variety. They see the crowd and play accordingly.
3. Ask the bride and groom the right questions before the day of.
4. Keep events flowing without having to talk to the bride or groom.

Bad DJs Do:
1. Talk too much or provide their own stand up. You are NOT funny and this ain't no comedy club.
2. Sit on their butt and not pay attention. People have to ask them to start events. It really does happen. It is all too common that someone has to ask the DJ to start events. They are the emcee and need to control the event the way you want them to without having to tell them to. Can you imagine having to tell the photographer to start taking pictures of the first kiss?
3. Play all the latest club mixes of old songs. People want to hear songs they recognize and can sing and dance along to.
4. Put the dollar dance way too early in the evening.
5. Drag out the events until later and later in the evening. Get through the events and then have a good time. This is for the benefit of all the guests as well as the bride and groom.
6. Play solitaire on their phone while the bride sits at the head table glaring at him with laser beem eyes waiting for the first dance...we've seen it.

These are actual things we've seen occur at weddings we've photographed. We are after one thing... a great experience for our clients. We want to help in any way we can. If you're looking at a DJ, email us and we will give you our honest opinion about them. We've shot enough weddings that we've probably had them at one of ours. If you are looking for recommendations we can send you a list of the ones we've seen to the best job. They may not be our favorites, but they do the best job. Your experience is most important.

There are good DJs and there are bad DJs and everyone has their own opinion. That's just a bit of ours.

Aaron is one of our favorite DJs. Here you can see he (on right) was even stuffed under some stairs and he provided the best reception we may have ever seen at this wedding.

Greta

This shoot is from back in May. I photographed Greta in a couple spots downtown. She is at the age where you just chase and chase and chase snapping the whole way. You have to have fun with little ones at this age and play with them. I get to act like a kid and they get to be kids. We have fun and the photos find a way to take themselves. I also sweat a lot and go home and take a nap.
