Many people ask us about our last name. Where is it from? How do you pronounce it? What's with the 'z'? So this blog post is a little about the Nuzum's. Nuzum is pronounced like nue - zuhm. We've heard it pronounced Nuz-zum, Noz-Zom, nuz-engardner, nuz-enhouser, among others.
Nuzum comes from Newsome. The Newsome clan once ruled England and at some point a portion of the Newsome family moved north to Ireland. There for reasons I have yet to discover, some changed their names to Nuzum. Nuzum in America are most prolific in West Virginia with Iowa a close second. Nuzum's can generally be found throughout the US.
While I am many generations removed from Ireland, it is the name that I bare and the heritage I will most claim. Today being St. Patrick's day gives cause for a little celebration. We won't drink and we won't party, but we will talk to our boys about what our name is and what it means to be a Nuzum.
Family's grow, family's change, and family's come back together. I am a Nuzum, my wife is now a Nuzum, our kids our Nuzums and their kids will be Nuzums. I will teach them as much as I can. We are Nuzums. Carry your own name with as much pride as I do. For it is not only who you are, but what you will be known for. The future is unwritten and always ahead of us. Make the long line of family that leads to you, proud of what they started and what you've become.
