We photographed the November session in and around their home due to cool temps, but in April we were able to get out on the beautiful golf course for a few photos. Zach was moving around a bunch and we worked with him. No reason to make him angry. I adjusted to him and we got some great shots.

The results speak for themselves in our photos. How we go about a photo shoot and how much you enjoy the shoot are extremely important. If you like a controlled environment where every photo is pain-stakingly agonized over or where we setup you up against props, you definitely don't match up to our style. If you want to have fun on your photo shoot and leave everything else behind for a few minutes, you've come to the right place.

So what does this have to do with Bethany and John? Well, I certainly felt like our shooting style and their expectations matched up perfectly. We had great conversation about life, Des Moines, and having fun while we shot. We covered a good amount of ground getting several different locations in to give them options. What I hope is that the photos not only serve as a reminder of this time in their lives together, but as a reminder of how much fun taking the photos were. The photos are meant to spark memories and the first memories that will come back to them is how the engagement photos went. I certainly hope they are good memories for these two because I know I really enjoyed working with them. Check out a few of our favorites below.

We had planned to do the first sight for these two outside the church but weather forced us inside. We always prefer to do the first sight outside for lighting reasons, but inside works just as well. For a couple the build up to the first sight can be the most stressful part of the day. We like to make it a fun and personal experience to help ease any nerves that may be building. The mood definitely changes following the first sight.

Following the ceremony we made a stop at the Ankeny Golf and Country Club for a few photos. At the exact same time Ankeny High Schoolers were stopping by for some prom photos. We made it work and were able to get some great shots of the bride, groom, and wedding party. While at the reception a some what rainy day was capped off with a vivid and full rainbow. Rain on your wedding is suppose to bring good luck, what does a stunning rainbow bring?

The ceremony was at a small winery just west of Newton with the reception in Newton. We knew that the weather would be rolling in and I was keeping a good eye on it. My phone sends me weather alerts so it was buzzing in my pocket as the storms approached. We decided to get as much outdoors as we could before the ceremony in case the weather showed up before we could get some afterwards. This wedding kept intact our undefeated streak of being able to get some photos outside during weddings. We've never been stopped. You might say we are the Cal Ripken Jr. of wedding photography.

The skies eventually opened up and down came the rain. This was unfortunately before the bridal party arrived at the reception site. That meant the coordinator was going to be playing umbrella concierge to get them into the reception. It made for some great photos.

After Brian and I had wrapped up shooting we needed to head back west directly into the oncoming storm. It started hailing before we could even leave Newton and we ended up under an overhang to protect the vehicle. Not too long after we were near Colfax and decided to wait out the rain. There was an accident up ahead so we would have been slowed anyway. The storm that rolled through was incredible. Not a ton of wind, but lots and lots of lightning. We were stopped at a powerless gas station in Colfax. It was a crazy situation to end the night on after such a beautiful wedding.

9 months seems to take forever when you are pregnant and then out of the blue the time is up and you are never fully ready. Then your little one arrives and the time speeds up...quicker then you could ever imagine. I can not believe that our youngest is already 2 weeks old. It is unbelievable to me how much they change in those first few days. This time I am really trying to freeze every moment and not miss out on a single memory, which equals a lot of picture taking in our house....which is not far from the norm.
